How to Protect Quartz Countertops from Stains, Scratches and Heat

By the EtchShield team, Vancouver · Updated

Quartz countertops don't etch like marble, but they can stain, scratch, and discolour from heat. Use trivets for anything hot, wipe strong pigments quickly, and avoid harsh chemicals. For white and light quartz in busy kitchens, clear protection film adds a barrier against stains and everyday scratches.

Quartz isn't natural stone

Engineered quartz is mostly crushed quartz bound with resin and pigments. The resin makes it non-porous and resistant to acids, which is why lemon and wine don't etch it. The same resin is what makes it vulnerable to heat and some chemicals.

Don't confuse it with quartzite, a natural stone. True quartzite is very hard, but some stones sold as quartzite are softer and can etch like marble. If you're not sure which you have, ask your fabricator.

What damages quartz

Risk What happens Prevention
Hot pans and appliances Resin can scorch, yellow or crack from sudden heat Always use trivets; keep air fryers and slow cookers on a board
Strong pigments Turmeric, curry, beet, hair dye and permanent marker can mark light quartz Wipe promptly; film blocks them entirely
Harsh chemicals Oven cleaner, paint stripper and strong alkaline cleaners can dull or discolour Mild dish soap or a quartz-safe cleaner
Scratches Knives, ceramic bases and dragged pots leave fine marks, most visible on dark quartz Cutting boards; film resists everyday scratches
Impacts Edges and corners can chip Care when loading the dishwasher and moving heavy pots

Does quartz need sealing?

No. Quartz is non-porous, so sealers have nothing to soak into. Skip products that promise to seal quartz; some leave a streaky residue.

When protection film makes sense on quartz

  • White and light quartz in kitchens that cook with turmeric, curry and tomato.
  • Dark quartz that shows every fine scratch.
  • Rentals and short-term rentals where guests don't know the care rules.
  • New builds and presales at move-in, when the surface is still perfect.

Film is not heat protection. Even with film, use trivets for hot pots and pans.

Frequently asked questions

Can I put a hot pan on quartz?

Most quartz manufacturers advise against it. Use a trivet every time.

Does vinegar damage quartz?

Occasional diluted vinegar won't etch quartz, but regular use of harsh cleaners can dull the resin. Mild soap and water is best.

How much does it cost to protect quartz?

The same as marble: about $30 to $35 per square foot installed in Metro Vancouver, $650 minimum. See the cost guide.

Will film change how my quartz looks?

With a matched gloss or matte finish, the film is very hard to see. Up close you may notice the wrapped edge.
