What Etches Marble? 9 Everyday Culprits and How to Prevent Etching
By the EtchShield team, Vancouver · Updated
Anything acidic etches marble. The most common culprits in Vancouver kitchens are lemon and lime juice, vinegar, wine, tomato sauce, soda, fruit juice and acidic cleaners. Wiping spills quickly reduces the damage, but the only way to prevent etching completely is to keep acids off the stone, which is what protection film does.

Why acids etch marble
Marble is made mostly of calcium carbonate. Acids react with it and dissolve a thin layer of the surface, leaving a dull, slightly rough mark. On polished marble the etch shows as a cloudy spot; on honed marble it's subtler but still visible in raking light. A few minutes of contact can be enough.
The 9 most common culprits
- Lemon and lime juice. The classic. A squeezed wedge left on the counter is one of the most common causes.
- Vinegar and salad dressings. Including vinegar used as a "natural" counter cleaner.
- Wine. Red and white both etch, and red can stain as well.
- Tomato sauce, ketchup and salsa. Often left under a pot or plate where no one sees it.
- Soda and sparkling drinks. Colas are especially acidic; a ring under a can is a common mark.
- Fruit juice. Orange, grapefruit, cranberry and pineapple.
- Yogurt and buttermilk. Mild, but they etch if left sitting.
- Acidic cleaners. Many all-purpose, bathroom and descaling cleaners. Use a pH-neutral stone cleaner instead.
- Bathroom products. Some toners, skincare acids and toilet-bowl cleaners on vanities.
How to tell if it's an etch

Look at the spot at a low angle with light behind it. An etch looks dull or cloudy and feels slightly rough or matte compared with the stone around it. A stain is darker and feels the same as the rest of the surface. Sealer helps with stains, not etches: see does sealer stop etching.
How to prevent etching
- Wipe acidic spills immediately with water and a soft cloth, then dry.
- Use boards and trays for cutting citrus, making dressings and serving wine.
- Use coasters for every glass, including water with lemon.
- Clean with pH-neutral products made for natural stone.
- Protect the surface with clear film so acids never touch the stone. It's the only method that prevents etching entirely rather than limiting it. How countertop film works.
Already etched?
Light etches on polished marble can sometimes be improved with a marble polishing compound. Deeper or widespread etching needs professional honing and polishing. If you're planning a refinish, protect the stone right after, while it's perfect.
Frequently asked questions
Does water etch marble?
Plain water doesn't, but hard-water deposits left to dry can leave marks. Wipe and dry the counter.
Does coffee etch marble?
Coffee is mildly acidic and is better known for staining. Wipe it up promptly.
Does honed marble etch less?
It etches the same way; honed marble just hides etches better because the surface is already matte.
Can I use vinegar to clean marble?
No. Vinegar etches marble. Use warm water with a pH-neutral stone cleaner.
