Why Marble Etches and How to Prevent It

By the EtchShield team, Vancouver · Updated

Marble is beautiful, but it reacts with everyday kitchen acids. That reaction leaves etch marks: dull, lighter patches that look like water spots but won't wipe away.

What causes etching

Marble is made mostly of calcium carbonate. When an acid such as lemon juice, wine or tomato sauce touches the surface, it dissolves a thin layer of that stone. The result is a change in the surface itself, not a deposit on top of it.

Common culprits:

  • Citrus juice and vinegar
  • Wine, coffee and soft drinks
  • Tomato sauce and salad dressing
  • Some household cleaners

Etching vs staining

Etching Staining
What it is Acid dissolves the stone surface Liquid soaks into the stone

Does a sealer help? No Yes, partly
Does film help? Yes Yes

Why sealers aren't enough

A sealer is absorbed into the stone and slows liquids from soaking in. It does not form a barrier on top, so acid still reaches the calcium carbonate surface. Sealed marble etches just as quickly as unsealed marble.

How to prevent etching

  1. Wipe up acidic spills immediately.
  2. Use cutting boards and trays for food prep.
  3. Choose pH-neutral stone cleaners.
  4. Install a clear protection film, which sits on top of the stone as a physical barrier.

Film is the only option on this list that stops acid from touching the stone at all. Learn more about marble protection film or see our pricing.

Frequently asked questions

Does sealing marble prevent etching?

No. A sealer sits inside the stone and slows liquid absorption, which helps with stains. Etching is a chemical reaction on the surface, so acid still reaches the stone through a sealer.

Can etch marks be removed?

Light etching can often be polished out by a stone restoration professional, but the mark returns the next time acid touches unprotected stone.

Will protection film change how my marble looks?

On polished stone the film is virtually invisible. Matte film is available for honed finishes.
